Acupuncture Treatments in Greater Burlington, VT

Evidence-based acupuncture for pain, anxiety, hormonal health,  autoimmune disease, and whole-body wellness.

Acupuncture treatment involves the gentle stimulation of specific points along the body’s meridians—pathways that influence circulation, nerve signaling, and the body’s regulatory processes. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), these pathways are associated with the flow of qi (pronounced “chee”), often described as the body’s vital energy. When this flow is supported, the body is better able to regulate, repair, and respond to stress.

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points along the body's meridian pathways, triggering the release of pain-reducing substances, regulating hormonal imbalances, improving circulation, and reducing inflammation and muscle spasms.

It’s one of the most studied and widely practiced forms of integrative medicine in the world. At Latitude, acupuncture is practiced by Lindsay Kintop, who is a registered nurse and licensed acupuncturist. Our acupuncture treatments here in South Burlington are personalized to address chronic pain, anxiety and stress, insomnia, women's hormonal health, digestive conditions, and more.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a practice rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves the gentle stimulation of specific points on the body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture points are located along pathways called meridians, which are associated with the flow of qi (pronounced “chee”), traditionally described as the body’s vital energy.

From a modern biomedical perspective, research suggests that acupuncture can influence the nervous system and other physiological processes involved in pain and the body’s response to treatment. Your acupuncture treatments at Latitude are personalized to your individual symptoms, health history, and wellness goals.

What conditions can acupuncture help with?

People seek acupuncture for many different health concerns. Research is strongest for certain types of pain, and acupuncture is also commonly used as part of an integrative approach to other symptoms and wellness goals. By calming the nervous system and improving circulation, acupuncture can help address:

•   Chronic pain (neck, back, joints)
•   Muscle tension and injury recovery
•   Stress and anxiety
•   Sleep issues and insomnia
•   Headaches and migraines
•   Women’s hormonal health, fertility, & reproductive wellness
•   Menstrual health, perimenopause, & menopause

•   Digestive concerns (bloating, IBS, reflux)
•   Fatigue and low energy
•   Immune support
•   Allergies and sinus issues
•   Autoimmune conditions
•   Emotional well-being and overall wellness

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes! Acupuncture has been practiced for more than 2,000 years and is used throughout the world today. It is considered safe when performed by a qualified, experienced practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. At Latitude, your acupuncture treatment will be performed by Lindsay Kintop, a Registered Nurse and Licensed Acupuncturist with nearly 25 years of clinical experience.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture uses ultra-fine needles placed at specific points on the body to stimulate the nervous system and activate your body’s natural healing response. This can help regulate internal systems, improve circulation, release tension, and encourage greater balance throughout the body.

Acupuncture supports the body as a whole rather than focusing solely on individual symptoms. This helps to:

•   Reduce inflammation
•   Relieve pain
•   Balance hormones
•   Improve sleep and mood
•   Support immune function

Does acupuncture hurt?

Generally, no. In fact, most people are actually surprised by how gentle and relaxing acupuncture can be. Many patients find their treatments deeply relaxing, with some even falling asleep during their session.

It’s completely normal to feel a little apprehensive about needles, especially before your first treatment. But keep this in mind: acupuncture needles are extremely thin—only slightly thicker than a human hair—and many patients barely feel them being inserted. You may notice sensations such as warmth, heaviness, tingling, or a mild ache around an acupuncture point, but these are typically brief.

How should I prepare for my acupuncture appointment?

There’s very little you need to do, but a few simple tips can make your first visit more comfortable:

  • Plan to arrive a few minutes early so you can settle in.

  • Wear comfortable clothing. Loose-fitting clothes can make it easier to access acupuncture points, but there’s no special dress code.

  • You don’t need to bring anything special with you.

  • A restroom key is available in our office if needed.

  • Please note that Latitude is a fragrance-free space. We ask that you kindly avoid wearing perfumes and strongly scented products to your appointment.

What should I expect at my first acupuncture appointment?

Your first acupuncture appointment will take approximately 75 minutes and includes a thorough intake and consultation, followed by your acupuncture treatment.

  • Lindsay will begin by reviewing your health history, including any significant medical diagnoses, current medications and supplements, symptoms, lifestyle, and your goals for treatment. Because Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at the body as an interconnected system, she may also ask about your sleep, digestion, stress, energy, and other aspects of your overall health.

  • As part of your assessment, Lindsay will look at your tongue—including its shape, color, and coating—and feel your pulse. Depending on your condition and concerns, she may also perform additional physical assessments.

  • Following your consultation, you’ll relax comfortably on a treatment table while specific acupuncture points are gently stimulated. Depending on your treatment plan, you may lie face up or face down, and the needles may remain in place for approximately 15 to 45 minutes.

  • You’ll be asked to remove your shoes and socks and, in some cases, other clothing so Lindsay can comfortably access the appropriate acupuncture points. Sheets and blankets are provided for your comfort and privacy.

  • Your treatment may also include supportive therapies such as heat therapy (moxa), cupping, or tui na massage when appropriate.

  • Many patients find acupuncture deeply relaxing and leave feeling calm and grounded. If you plan to exercise after your appointment, be sure to stay well hydrated.
