Can Acupuncture Help With Insomnia and Sleep Problems?

Acupuncture is commonly used as a complementary approach for insomnia and difficulty getting consistent, restful sleep. Research suggests acupuncture may help improve certain aspects of sleep, although evidence is still developing and your own results may vary.

Acupuncture may help support people experiencing:

●     Difficulty falling asleep

●     Frequently waking up during the night

●     Waking up earlier than intended

●     Restless sleep

●     Difficulty winding down at bedtime

●     Sleep problems associated with stress or anxiety

●     Daytime fatigue related to poor sleep

We'll discuss your current sleep patterns and how acupuncture may fit alongside other care or recommendations you're already receiving.

Looking at the Bigger Picture Behind Your Sleep

Sleep problems don't always look the same or have the same contributing factors. Stress, lifestyle, physical discomfort, hormonal changes, medications, and other health concerns can all affect how well you sleep.

During your first appointment, Lindsay will ask about your sleep and waking patterns, how long you've been experiencing problems, stress levels, medications, lifestyle, and overall health.

This helps shape an acupuncture plan around your particular sleep concerns rather than treating every case of poor sleep the same way.

What Happens During an Acupuncture Session for Sleep?

Your first appointment begins with a conversation about your sleep. Lindsay will ask when you're having trouble sleeping, what your nights typically look like, and whether other symptoms or health concerns may be contributing.

From there, she'll select acupuncture points based on what you've discussed and gently place the needles. You'll then have about 20 to 30 minutes to rest in a quiet, dimly lit treatment room.

Before you leave, Lindsay will discuss recommended treatment frequency and how your plan may change as your sleep patterns and symptoms change.

Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture for Sleep

 Can acupuncture help with insomnia?

Some research suggests acupuncture may help improve certain measures of sleep in people with insomnia, although evidence is still developing and results vary. Acupuncture is generally used as a complementary approach rather than a replacement for appropriate medical care.

How many acupuncture sessions are needed for sleep problems

The number of treatments depends on your symptoms, how long you've been experiencing sleep problems, and how you respond to acupuncture. Lindsay will recommend a treatment plan based on your individual situation.

Can I use acupuncture alongside other treatments for insomnia?

Yes. Acupuncture can be used alongside conventional healthcare and healthy sleep practices. Continue following recommendations from your physician or other healthcare providers, including guidance regarding medications or existing sleep treatments.
